Online Media Center
How do you get the digital files the press needs from you in a format they can use, in a convenient way, and a timely manner? Is the online Media Center the best solution for your organization?
Answering this question is a challenge, because there are a number of tools we use today that eventually do get the job done:
- Online Media Center
- CD-ROM (custom one-off and large volume production runs) and associated courier costs
- Sending slides or photographs and associated courier costs
- Email messages with file attachments (don't forget about file compression software)
- FTP sites
Not everyone works with the same tools as easily, or effectively, as everyone else. That is why, using one, or maybe even two, of the tools listed above for every end user is a recipe for increased costs, reduced productivity, and lost media or marketing opportunities.
The other challenge to consider is what happens when the press person wanting access to your digital files cannot use the tool you provide to get your files? If end users cannot access your files easily, they give up in frustration (or ask you to courier a CD-ROM), and you fail to achieve your objectives:
- You do not get the majority of photo space in an article
- Your logo appears fuzzy in an advertisement
- The article about you and your organization is not written
Online Media Center - Challenges
Current online Media Center design and implementations do not work effectively for the following reasons:
1. The media is reluctant to go to Media Centers to get content, because:
- The digital imagery and story ideas are usually not exclusive (meaning everyone can get them)
- They need to register online to get access to your pictures and have to wait for them
- The files they do get are not big, or sharp, enough, or in the file format their editor wants
2. Online Media Center development is time consuming and costly
- New web site development costs are high, starting at $25,000 and going up
- Adding new content to your site takes time as you have to wait for IT, or a third party supplier, to find time to fulfill your request
3. It is difficult to control how the content downloaded from your site is used
You need a solution that:
Works with your current website (more or less, as is) Shows you exactly where you will save money and time.
Online Media Center - Solutions
The solution you choose has to help you with the difficult task of getting more free coverage and, perhaps, even better press. It has to free your marketing team to do what they do best (which is not burning files to a CD-ROM and preparing FedEx packages).
You need to easily integrate your current online Media Center. You do not want to change the approved look, or feel, of your site. Use it as it is!
You need the ability to update the content on your site and make as many, or as few, digital files accessible as you want the press to see. You need to be able to change the content on your online Media Center in seconds.
You need to group similar content together in language-specific groups. All the materials the reporter may want must be in one, easily accessible place.
You need to do all of this without incurring any added Webmaster costs.
The solution you need must:
Avoid costly custom web development for a "new" Media Center and provide the ability to keep your information as current as you wish, at no further cost to you.
